Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)

MTF refers to the ability of a lens to accurately reproduce an image of alternating black and white lines with a known spacing onto an image plane.

This measurement is taken behind the lens and is a direct measurement of the image circle produced. The more line pairs/mm that can be distinguished, the better the resolution of the lens.

The diagram illustrates how the MTF of a lens affects an image, as it is projected onto a sensor.

The optical resolving power of a lens is of great importance in vision applications. The most important factor to consider when matching a lens to a digital camera is whether the lens is capable of resolving down to the individual pixels on the camera sensor.
